GPIO Breakout

So, I've got my Monster Borg running around with an xbox360 controller and a whole load of c (sorry not a Python person). Now I need to turn my attention to some mechanics. I need to get at the Pi GPIO connector to add a lot of things, but it's hidden in the Thunder Borg/Pi sandwich atm. Has anyone come up with a nice solution. My solution atm is to mount the batteries underneath , extend the power connector and mount the pi/thunder on the top. Then add larger pillars between the two, but I would need to extend the power/i2c bit of the expansion connector to reach the Thunder Borg.
Anyone got a better solution?

I am not sure if this would actually fit, but maybe you could use one of these: ModMyPi Zero Prototyping pHAT (Zero).

My thinking is that the GPIO pins would probably need a slight extension from the Pi, but all of the pins on the GPIO header would be available to wire to on this board. I would suggest a TriBorg+, however I am fairly certain they are a bit too tall to keep the ground clearance underneath.

P.S.
There is nothing wrong with coding in C, we use it all of the time :)
