Would it be possible two control a singel dc motor by hooking up two of the picoborg "control-sets" to one motor and use a diode to block the current? Completely new to electronics but I don't see why it wouldn't work!

Bi-directional DC motors
Unfortunately PicoBorg is not capable of driving a single motor bi-directionally by using two output sets.
The reason is that the + connection is always connected, the board connects or disconnects the - connection to control power.
The PicoBorg Reverse is designed to be able to drive motors bi-directionally as well as being capable of driving more powerful motors.
